Solid timber products are manufactured from natural materials and ideally need to be protected from the elements. Timber expands and contracts with varying climatic conditions which may cause damage to paint work and timber finish. In exposed locations, high traffic areas, coastal locations or extreme heat or extreme cold the timber must be maintained very rigorously with frequent inspection of the coating and repainting of the timber.
If you are not opting for any priming or painting and your product is being installed with a sanded finish, it is essential that all timber is primed and coated on interior and exterior surfacesto include all edges(top, bottom and sides) immediately, as exposure to weather will cause damage.
The following information provides some basic guidelines on maintaining painted/stained timber for windows, doors, gates, garage doors and exterior/interior joinery. General care will give many years of life between re painting cycles, and simple steps such as wiping down the joinery finish to remove dirt and insects will help extend the life of the decorative finish.
At least bi-annually:
- Hinges and handles should be checked and treated with a light oil for ease of operation.
- Dust or grime should be removed from weather seals
Yearly (Ideally every Spring): - The joinery should be inspected and any minor areas of coating damage, shakes or open joints should be spot repaired.
- All areas to be re-coated should be lightly abraded with a fine grade abrasive paper, washed down with a mild detergent solution, and rinsed with clean water to remove dust, insects, and other contaminants, which can form a base for algae and fungi growth. All abrasive cleaners, wire brushes and scrubbers should be avoided.
- Using a good quality, long haired, synthetic brush, apply one coat of topcoat in the appropriate shade and colour. Allow to dry for 3 hours between coats. If regular maintenance is delayed or some other damage has occurred, additional steps may be necessary to reinstate the finish to its initial condition.
- If the damaged area is widespread, lightly abrade the complete frame, repair the damaged areas apply the second coat to the complete frame.
- Seal any exposed end grain sealer and thoroughly dry.
- When painting or touching up joinery, avoid painting over rubber/brush seals, glazing or hardware.
Please adhere to instructions below for optimum results.
Brush quality: the quality of the brush is very important. A long-haired synthetic brush will give the best results; short haired or worn brushes may leave lines in the dry film. Thoroughly wet the brush with water before starting, ensuring the base of the bristles (the heel of the brush) is fully wetted.
For best results follow these steps:
- Load the coating generously onto the surface and disperse the paint briskly.
- Even out the coating with light diagonal cross strokes, do not overbrush, the coating will flow and level naturally.
- Finish the application with light brush strokes in the direction of the grain.
- Temperature and humidity: do not attempt to paint when the temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius, or if the relative humidity exceeds 80%: the curing and performance of the coating may be impaired.
- Brush care: wash out brushes with a mild detergent solution, such as washing up liquid, then rinse with clean water.
